Syphilis- Everything About Syphilis -1

Syphilis- Everything About Syphilis -1
By CD Mohatta

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease. Bacteria cause it. This infection spreads through the open sores that form during the disease. Syphilis develops in phases and goes into dormant phase after some time. If the patient develops infection in this dormant phase again, syphilis may cause very heavy damage to all the organs of the body. If treated properly in the early stages, it is a curable disease. It is a complex disease and needs understanding. Let us find out more about syphilis.

Syphilis> cause>

A bacterium called treponema pallidum causes syphilis. It spreads from one person to another by any type of sexual contact. The bacteria pass when there is an open sore on any part of the contact. Any sexual activity that brings another person in contact with the open sore will pass on the syphilis. The main transmission therefore occurs during anal, vaginal or oral sexual activity. A mother can pass on syphilis to her baby. Syphilis does not spread by sharing toilet seats, clothing, utensils, or swimming pools. Read on about the phases of syphilis to understand how the open sores form and how the disease goes into latency without sores for a long time.

Syphilis> Phases Of Development>

Syphilis develops in phases. The first phase is called the primary phase. The second stage is called the secondary stage and the third stage is called the latent stage. The first appearance of the infection is seen in ten to ninety days. The average span is twenty-one days. This is the first phase after getting infected. This stage will last from a month to two and you will see healing with or without any treatment. During the first stage, firm red papules that are painless form on the genitals or the anus. If the papules, that are called chancre, form inside the vagina or the anus, they may go unnoticed. As the disease shows no outward signs after the first phase, many patients fail to notice it. If you notice any red, painless small bumps on your genitals, contact your doctor immediately and get treated as soon as possible. You will be free of the disease after the first phase itself.

Genital Warts - Topical Treatment

Genital Warts - Topical Treatment
By CD Mohatta

The treatment of genital warts is not simple. It needs patience. Let us discuss about treatment of warts with application of Imiquimod, which is one of the most popular medicines for this.

Genital warts form on the male genitalia, female genitalia (both inside and outside) and near anus. They may appear singly or in a bunch and if allowed untreated, they can grow bigger and appear like cauliflowers. It is better to prevent getting genital warts rather than treating them. But the problem is this- one who passes on the virus that causes genital warts may be unaware that he/she has got the virus. So despite all precautions such as use of condoms etc. you may still get them.

Genital warts- surgical removal

To remove the wart the most popular method is to apply liquid nitrogen to it. Liquid nitrogen has very low temperature and will kill the skin and tissues of the warts. After few applications, the wart will get killed and can be removed easily. This is done by doctors and is not a very painful procedure. Again how to and whether to use liquid nitrogen depends upon the location of the wart. Your doctor may get electrocautery or surgical excision to remove the wart. Lasers have emerged as a good option. All the treatments depend upon the location of the wart. Even after the wart is removed, there is no guarantee that it will not come up again.

Treatment With Imiquimod-

Imiquimod is used topically to treat warts on the genital and anal areas. It helps the body’s immune system to fight the virus. It does not cure warts. It helps the body to get rid of them. It also does not kill the virus. New warts can appear when imiquimod is being used.

Care-

Imiquimod should be not be used in pregnancy without doctor’s consent. It also cannot be used inside the genitals: inside vagina. Imiquimod should not be used on inflamed skin. Use of imiquimod does not stop spreading of virus by the user. Imiquimod has to be used thrice a week for sixteen weeks.

Common side effects of imiquimod-

Skin blisters, cough, body aches, itching in genital area, etc., are common side effects of imiquimod. Your doctor will tell you more in detail.

Genital Herpes and Toilet Seats

Genital Herpes and Toilet Seats
By CD Mohatta

Does genital herpes spread through using same toilet seat? I have seen this question being asked repeatedly at various places on the Internet. Everybody is worried about getting infected with genital herpes and this fear makes people think of different ways in which they believe that they may get infected by herpes. The fear of sharing toilet seat and getting herpes originates similarly. The truth is that it is extremely difficult, rather nearly impossible to get genital herpes by sharing the same toilet seat. The virus does not survive outside body and dies quickly. The virus therefore cannot be spread by such means as sharing the same towel or the same toilet seat.

How the virus spreads-

Genital herpes is transmitted by sexual contact. If you come in sexual contact with an infected person you may get herpes. If the affected person has active lesions the chances of getting herpes increase. But many people shed the virus even if they show no outward sign of lesions. They also spread herpes. Herpes virus enters our body through mucous membrane or a cut in the skin or. The inside of mouth, inner genitals, anus, are all covered with mucous membrane.

Any activity that brings the live virus in other’s body in touch with your body may transmit herpes. In case of toilet seats and towels the virus may get transferred to them but does not remain alive. Therefore such virus is not dangerous. The virus remains alive in the body and therefore transmission from body to body causes herpes. If another object comes in-between the virus does not get transmitted, because it dies.
